Submission of a Written Request to the Japanese Government regarding the US Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

The U.S. government added approximately 400 items-including construction machinery and related parts-to the list of products subject to a 50% additional tariff on steel and aluminum products in accordance with Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, effective August 18.

In response, CEMA has compiled a request document outlining the following concerns. On September 5, Chairman Mr. Yamamoto formally handed the written request to Mr. Ibuki, Director-General of the Manufacturing Industries Bureau of METI, requesting the Japanese government to take necessary actions.

Summary of the written request

  1. To negotiate with the U.S. government to exclude construction machinery and parts exported from Japan from the newly added steel and aluminum derivatives under Section 232 of the U.S. Trade Expansion Act; and
  2. Implementing necessary economic measures for domestic companies that are affected, as well as the construction equipment industry as a whole.
